Naming my dog

I decided to get a dog in the fall of 2001. Unfortunately, I had recently been robbed and also was beginning a new career that called for many hours to be spent alone. So, for both security and companionship, I thought a dog would be perfect. Before I went to the pound, I had an idea of what I was looking for. I wanted a large, male dog and I was going to name him Cake in homage to Jake. On my first trip to the shelter, I knew I had found the dog. But, the dog was a she. Although Cake is not really a gender-specific name, I didn't think it fit a girl dog. On the day I brought my dog home from the pound, I still hadn't arrived at a name. My girlfriend at the time suggested that I think of fish that I like to catch (I am an avid fisherman). We had a web site open that revealed the etymology of any name to help us with our decision. I finally arrived at Cobia. It is a beautiful fish that looks a lot like a small shark. The name seemed feminine, and I could call her Cobi for short. We proceeded to enter "cobi" into the web site and it returned the result, "this is the pet form of the name Jacob". At the exact same moment, my stereo blew out. We immediately knew that we found our name and that Jake approved! It was a wonderful confirmation of our choice and Cobi has provided me with much of the love, companionship, and support that I was so blessed to have received from Jake himself.
